LinkedIn Groups API: Professional Engagement Anytime, Anywhere

Millions of professionals use LinkedIn Groups to connect and share insights with like-minded professionals every day. With almost one million groups on LinkedIn, the top request we receive from group owners is to provide new ways to enable engagement within their communities. With that goal in mind, we’re announcing today that application developers can now take the rich content and engagement of LinkedIn Groups across the professional web using the new LinkedIn Groups API.

Professional Engagement Anytime, Anywhere
Developers can bring the insights and powerful networking tools in LinkedIn Groups directly to professional applications. Whether building tools to help professionals keep in touch with their communities, enhancing organization websites, or creating mobile apps for special events, we think LinkedIn Groups are a key lever for developers to drive rich, professional conversation and networking within tools that our members use. The Groups API will enable applications to:

  • Get Group Discussions by Popularity and Recency
  • Get My Group Memberships
  • Get Suggested Groups
  • Join a Group
  • Post new group discussions
  • Comment, like and follow group discussions
  • Establish connections with other professionals

Powering Events with LinkedIn Groups
As an example of what developers can do with the Groups API, we are excited to have Microsoft debut the first large-scale implementation of the Groups API on their Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference 2011 event website.

http://bit.ly/WPC11_chat This initiative is part of Microsoft’s larger social media efforts that reaches across multiple channels and beyond this event to ensure an ongoing dialogue with its partner community throughout the year. According to Microsoft, 53% of partners surveyed in a recent Microsoft Partner Network survey use LinkedIn. Integrating LinkedIn Groups to the event site will promote growth of this partner community, which relies heavily on business networking, as well as vibrant and relevant real-time conversation during the event. The Groups API will also allow the Microsoft Partner Network to take advantage of content longevity, as community-generated content will continue to live on inside the LinkedIn Group beyond the event time-frame.  Imagine the benefit to attendees as they share comments about event sessions and activities for other attendees to consume in real-time, and establish long-lasting professional connections with others in their community. Hear more about how Microsoft is using Groups at their online forum chat today.

Ready, Set, Code!

We know that it is important to make our API capabilities available to developers in the technologies that they are comfortable with. Thanks to the flexibility of our platform, our new Groups API is accessible via our easy to use JavaScript API as well as our language agnostic RESTful APIs.

I tried clicking on link for this website via Facebook and they claim they can't connect until my account is "restored". Apparently, I have an active account, or I wouldn't be typing this message.

I've been searching API docs for a while now and not able to find how to pull in public group data (like popular discussion threads) without having the user authenticate. How does the Microsoft Site do it?

Looks like they cache the oauth credentials in another handler or it's a cron job that uses the oauth creds to store the content.

Hi, we are looking for the right platform for a long-term online project collaborating between different groups in three countries. It would be great if members could use their LinkedIn profiles to convey their affiliations and expertise. Are there any online workspace services that offer LinkedIn connect for user sign-in and credentials?

I am not quite sure how to navigate around this site but I am looking for anything to do with advertising, especially copywriting. I have recently got an MA from London University (Goldsmiths College) in writing and would like to put it and my other talents to some good use. Does anyone know about internship?

how do i remove a contact?

Is there any way to have a set of moderators for specific LinkedIN group and have an ability to ban some users that abuse the rules of that group?
For example in "C# Developers/Architects" group (and many others) there is a people (actually most of them looks like zombie accounts) who posts jobs postings in inappropriate areas outside of Jobs and Jobs Discussions). I would like to ban them via some kind of API, or directly from the site.

Is there any way to do it?

Hi there I realise the LinkedIn Share button now works over SSL pages but I am wondering does the Join our Group API also work over SSL pages.
Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm an Account Manager with a Creative Agency. We've had a brief from a prospective client to 'do something exciting' with their new LinkedIn Corporate page! I was wondering whether the API allowed developers to make a degree of graphical changes to the page, as can be done on FaceBook? Any examples of innovative LinkedIn pages would also be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Or I can do it only through API and external application?

Hi,
I am launching a portal for professionals in a specific segment. I have integrated LInkedIn group API to integrate the comments and community from the linkedIN group I have set up. In specific I want to add the following features:

Allow people to Join the Group directly from my site
Post new group discussions
Post comments from my site directly into posts that get published on the linkedIn group
Directly establish connections with other professionals who are part of the community on my site

I have integrated certain features, but these above features are turning out to be tricky to implement. Can someone shed light on this. Are we able to integrate these above features through the API, what do I need to do to integrate these features.

Thank you .
