Share plugin not working

Hello,

I get an 'error' when I attempt to share an article from my blog. The thing is, it works for older articles but not all--very strange. I attempted to work around this and post the link directly from my LinkedIn profile, but I still get the same error. The only thing I am able to post is a simple text update. But the link to my blog gets an error everytime.

I contacted our marketing software provider (Hubspot) and they told me that this is a known issue and that LinkedIn is working on it. Any updates on this?

Thank you. Here's the link to my blog article that generates a share 'error', in case it helps:

I have also attached a screenshot of the error.

Greetings Marine:
Yes there are known errors on the share plugin that the engineering team is aware of. Unfortunately we do not have a timeline to report for a fix for the issues.
Thanks
Steve

I am having the same problem. I post a link to my blog in my status update and that works ok, but when I "share" the post, it doesn't post to the groups I have selected. Also can't post a discussion with the link to my blog directly in the group. It has always worked fine before today.

Greetings Frank:
There are known issues with sharing to groups that are in the bug que. They are being prioritized with the other issues. Can you please let us know the URL of one of your posts and how often the problem occurs.
Thanks

2/8/2012 Error with share link. Still! Is anyone really interested in fixing this?

Again, in order for us to take this back to the team in question, we need a URL that doesn't work, so they can make sure that the fixes include all known cases. If you want to see this fixed, as we do, please provide examples of URLs that aren't working.

Thanks!
Kirsten

I am experiencing what I believe is a similar issue. I have a test site hosted here where the linked in share button is inside of an iframe. When you attempt to share the page, the plugin spins for a bit and then just comes back with the message "error."

Greeting Mr. McTesteron ;)
It worked for me when I just tried it. Can you please try again and see if it is working for you?
Thanks

We are having a similar issue. None of our shares seem to work due to some sort of parsing issue. For example, check out this link:
http://www.linkedin.com/cws/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Ficont.ac%2FUiYv&original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.icontact-archive.com%2FzHo1yHG08U68sVDoea1b088mQt37lC6W%3Fw%3D4%23linkedinshare&token=&isFramed=false&_ts=1330014856298.2732

It throws an error when trying to connect. I believe this is because our URL shortener icont.ac is not being parsed correctly (you can see this URL in the link above). If I change this to icont.com, then it works fine:
http://www.linkedin.com/cws/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Ficont.com%2FUiYv&original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.icontact-archive.com%2FzHo1yHG08U68sVDoea1b088mQt37lC6W%3Fw%3D4%23linkedinshare&token=&isFramed=false&_ts=1330014856298.2732

Can someone please look into this? We just need to make sure our URL shortener gets parsed correctly, otherwise our customers cannot share to LinkedIn. Thanks!

Greetings Eddie:
Can you please give us the URL you are trying to share so we can debug. One way you can debug on your own is to hit your page with CURL or wget and see what the response looks like - in your case your probably want to make sure your link is redirecting properly.
Thanks
Steve

This is one of the pages we are trying to share:
http://www.icontact-archive.com/zHo1yHG08U68sVDoea1b088mQt37lC6W?w=4

If you click the InShare icon at the top or in the email body, the pop-up will churn for a few seconds then throw an error page.

The link it's going to is:
http://www.linkedin.com/cws/share?url=http%3A%2F%2Ficont.ac%2FUiYv&original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.icontact-archive.com%2FzHo1yHG08U68sVDoea1b088mQt37lC6W%3Fw%3D4&token=&isFramed=false&_ts=1330020815755.8984

Greetings Eddie:
There is known to be problem addThis javascript that is on the page. Can you please remove it and see if you still have the problem. If you need to keep both on the page then please put our JavaScript last.
Thanks

We tried moving your Javascript last, and tried removing addThis altogether, but the problem remains.

We have narrowed it down to the way LinkedIn is parsing our domain "icont.ac". This has been working fine for months, but in the past day or two, this domain is no longer being parsed correctly.

I have forward it on to our engineering team - we'll see what they say.

The share scraper sometimes has issues with the content of pages - can you share the page directly on the LInkedIn website or do you get the same issue there? We'll let the backend team know, but if the same problem appears on the site I encourage you to contact customer support at http://help.linkedin.com as well to get more visibility and traction on the issue.

I can share the URL directly on the LinkedIn website and it works fine. The shortened URL is http://icont.ac/UiZe.

But when using your share button, we still get an error because our shortened domain (icont.ac) is not being parsed correctly by LinkedIn. This just started happening last week.

We're having similar issues on our site with the AddThis share widget - specifically with our blog content.

While sharing links from hbr.org seems to work properly with the AddThis share widget (eg http://hbr.org/tip/2011/10/05/three-questions-to-get-the-feedback-you-need), sharing from our blogs returns an error (eg attempting to share http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2012/02/reimagining_capitalism.html results in the linked in message "We’re sorry. Something unexpected happened and your request could not be completed. Please close this window and try again.").

Since we haven't actually changed the code for the Share widget on our site for at least a few months, the timing and the symptoms indicate that possibly something between AddThis and LinkedIn has changed. We've been looking for hints on the AddThis side, but their Share widget is performing perfectly well for the other services we link to within the version we render, and since this thread indicates others are having what seems like the same issue, we were wondering whether some attention might be given to this problem.

For what it's worth, we also use URL shortening - the blog post above, for example, would be shared as http://s.hbr.org/xSSjRk on Twitter.

Forgot to mention a pretty important point - in terms of timing, the change for us was seen fairly specifically between Feb 10th and Feb 11th. By our metrics, site referrals from LinkedIn to blogs.hbr.org dropped by up to 63% week-on-week.

Hi Matt,

I believe this is actually an issue on the AddThis side, but specifically with their integration with us (which explains why it works for others, but not us). I need to confirm to be sure and will report back. I'm not sure if this is an option or not for you, but if you use our share button directly, this hopefully will not be an issue for you.

Thanks!

I am trying to add linkedIN plugin on my blog through Blogger using the add gadget HTML/Javascript code. It is a company profile plug in with HTML code taken from your site. When added to blog it appears on the side bar but the link does not work.

Can you please advise if this is a java error since it is Blogger or is this a known error?

Blog url is http://emerald5ltd.blogspot.com

It's likely not allowing you to post arbitrary javascript to the site. You may be able to see if there's a javascript error in the console. When putting plugins into any framework there's a chance the system will disable functionality that could be harmful.

Hi Heath,

The issue isn't actually Javascript related like Kirsten theorized, it's actually an issue with the existing CSS/Markup on the page. I apologize, but the person who designed the layout markup is badly abusing "position: relative" throughout the site structure, even when it's not needed or worse is detrimentally making more workarounds (which were added to fix the original "relative" problem) needed. How this impacts the plugin is that the plugin can't correctly determine where it is on the page, so the offsets it provides for the hovered iframe are being positioned far off screen to the right. I've tried to find a simple solution, but unfortunately one doesn't exist that I've seen without dramatically recreating the site markup. I'll have the lead engineer also take a look and see if he has any recommendations.

Thanks!
